India's First Gold Medal in Olympic:

Abhinav Bindra secured India's first individual gold medal in Olympic history today in the men's 10- meter air rifle shooting competition in Beijing today.

The 25-year-old Bindra, the world champion in the event, won with a score of 596 ahead of defending champion Zhu Qinan of China and Finland's Henri Hakkinen.

India's previous eight Olympic gold medals came from its field hockey team, which failed to qualify for the Beijing Games. The world's second-most populous country had won individual silver and bronze medals in sprinting, hurdling, shooting, tennis and weightlifting.

``I was not thinking too much, I just tried to shoot well,'' Bindra told reporters.

India's previous best individual performances were sprinting and hurdling silver medals by Norman Pritchard at the 1900 Paris Games, according to the International Olympic Committee. Trap shooter Rajyavardhan Rathore's also won silver in Athens four years ago.
